About Kapaʻa Surf School

We’re a small, locally owned surf school based right in Kapaʻa—rooted in respect for the ocean, safety, and the joy of catching your first wave.

Kapaʻa Surf School is run by lifelong Kauaʻi surfers who grew up in these waters. We keep things friendly, relaxed, and personal so you never feel like you’re just another spot in a crowded lineup.

We specialize in beginners, families, and small groups. Whether you’ve never touched a surfboard, are traveling with kids, or just want an easy, confidence‑building session, we pace everything to your comfort level.

Safety is at the heart of every lesson. We choose mellow, beginner‑friendly breaks; keep class sizes small; and pair you with local instructors who understand the tides, winds, and reef. Our goal is simple: you feel safe, supported, and stoked.

Small class sizes—most sessions are 2–4 surfers per instructor.
All gear included: soft‑top boards, rash guards, and reef‑safe sunscreen.
Patient instructors who love teaching first‑timers as much as they love surfing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A few of the things we’re asked most often before booking. If you don’t see your question here, just add it to the notes in the booking form.

Not at all. Most of our surfers are complete beginners. We start on the sand with basics like stance, paddling, and how to fall safely, then move into calm, waist‑high water where you can take your time getting comfortable.

Bring a swimsuit, towel, water, and any personal sun protection you like (hat, sunglasses for the beach, etc.). We provide rash guards and reef‑safe sunscreen, but you’re always welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Yes. Every lesson includes a soft‑top surfboard that matches your size and ability, plus a long‑sleeve rash guard. If you have your own board, let us know in the booking notes and we’ll help you decide what’s best for the conditions.

Yes. We teach kids starting around age 7 for group lessons, and can sometimes accommodate younger surfers in a private or family session depending on comfort and swim ability. We keep a very close instructor‑to‑student ratio with kids.

If conditions are unsafe (strong winds, storms, or heavy surf) we’ll contact you as early as possible to reschedule or cancel at no charge. If it’s simply smaller or a bit overcast, we’ll usually still surf—it can actually make for ideal beginner waves.

Many of our guests are not strong swimmers. We stay in waist‑to‑chest‑high water, use large, buoyant boards, and keep instructors close by at all times. You should be comfortable floating with assistance and being in the ocean; we’ll handle the rest.

Absolutely. We regularly host small wedding parties, birthday sessions, and team outings. Add details in the booking notes or send us an email, and we’ll help design a session that fits your group and schedule.
